PRESENT DAY

I paced my office, the weight of anticipation heavy in my steps. What was taking him so long to get back to me? We needed to trace every movement Martina Monroe made, and we needed to stop the investigation before she exposed all of us.

When the phone finally rang, I snapped, "It's about time."

"Got good news and bad news," the voice on the other end replied.

"Just give it to me."

"We know exactly where she is. She wasn't hard to find," he said, a hint of admiration in his voice.

"And the bad news?"

"We also spotted Lieutenant Tippin entering Drakos Monroe offices. They must've made the connection to Sergeant Hirsch from CoCo County. My guess, based on Martina Monroe's reputation, is they're investigating the murder of Nicholas Hirsch."

I sighed, a feeling of dread settling in. "Is there any way they will find out what happened?"

"With any other investigator, I'd tell you there's no way. It's buried deep. But this is Martina Monroe. She's made headlines for solving unsolvable cases. Twenty-year-old cold cases. She's even taken down sitting sheriffs and homicide detectives. A mayor. She's relentless."

This was not the news I wanted to hear. "That's exactly why we need to stop her. What's the plan?"

"Look, I'm not saying we can't take her out. Nobody's beyond the reach of my rifle. But if we go that route, you'll have the entire CoCo County Sheriff's Department on your tail. And then there's Drakos Monroe. They've got a reputation for working in the shadows, doing whatever it takes. Rumors say they've even taken out targets themselves."

The gravity of his words hung in the air between us.

Rex continued, "You really don't want to mess with them, Priscilla."

"So, what am I supposed to do?"

"It's risky, but there are other ways to make her back off."

"Like?"

"Well, she has a daughter. And there's only one person in this world she probably cares about more than Hirsch: her daughter."

The implication was clear, but it made my stomach churn.

I stopped pacing and stared out at the Bay Bridge, taking in its beauty amidst my turmoil. How had it come to this? Sure, I had done questionable things to get ahead, but threatening the innocent? One could argue it wasn't the first or thirtieth time. All for the Stanzels? I was beginning to question why I had been protecting them all this time. When I started out with Maurice, they weren't into half the horrific things they were into now.

The voice on the other end pulled me back. "What do you want me to do?"

"Can you find out what she knows? Maybe tap into the servers at Drakos Monroe Security & Investigations?"

Rex laughed, a sound I found grating in the moment. "It'd be easier to get into the White House."

Shaking my head, I felt backed into a corner. "Do whatever it takes to stop this investigation. And for Pete's sake find Victoria!"

"You got it," he said confidently.

I ended the call, my mind racing. What would Martina Monroe uncover? I knew Maurice said to do everything possible to preserve the family's name and keep them out of prison.
