Chapter 19

“Sam has a friend visiting from out of town and they’re supposed to go out to dinner Friday night,” Liz told me over the phone the next day, “That may be a good night for me to run into him.”

Liz was exactly right. It was perfect. The big question, however, was where Sam would choose to take his buddy. We had no clue, which was why on Friday night, I had to go undercover and sit in my car in front of Sam’s building till he and the guy came out. I waited for almost an hour till I saw the guys walk out the front door and hail a cab. Then I followed them to their dinner destination, which turned out to be Carmine’s, a fantastic Italian place located just off Rush Street in a little area Chicagoans call “Viagra Triangle,” because it’s one of three neighboring hot spots that attracts a crowd mostly in their forties and fifties.

The second I saw Sam and his buddy enter the restaurant, I called Liz and Mike, who were both on stand-by, waiting to find out where they should quickly show up. I told both of them I was parked across the street and that they should get into my car to meet each other before walking into Carmine’s.

Mike was the first to arrive. Climbing into the back seat of a 1992 Honda Accord, he said, “Dude, a hundred bucks, plus you’re paying for dinner, right?”

Boy, Mike had certainly gotten greedy in his short time as our employee. I answered, “One hundred and yes, I’m paying for dinner, but no expensive bottles of vino, got it?”

“So, what’s up with this chick? What’s her story? She hot?”

“Very cute,” I replied. “But nothing like your first date,” I wanted to add.

At that moment, Liz knocked on the window. Mike opened the door and scooted over to the other side to make room for her.

“Hi, Jeff!” she said excitedly.

I turned around. “Hey, Liz.”

Liz then extended a handshake to Mike. “Hi. I’m Liz.”

“Mike...” he said as he shook.

“Liz, you look really nice,” I said sincerely.

She did. Anna had told me that she had bought a new outfit at Barneys, and it was really working for her. The funny thing about it was that the top made her boobs look really big. Maybe all Liz needed was some hot new clothes to highlight what was already there. Of course, Dave and I call dressing to enhance and or enlarge any parts of the body “false advertising.” But as far as Sam was concerned, maybe seeing his girlfriend looking this hot would cause him to reconsider the boob job part of his wish list. Not that it was an issue anymore, as Liz was now seriously considering having the surgery.

“Thanks, Jeff,” she smiled, “This is a big night.”

“Are you nervous?” Mike asked.

“Yes. Very. This is risky.”

“Trust me, Liz...” I comforted her, “Everything’s going to turn out great.”

“It will,” Mike reassured, “Look at Anna.”

Yeah…look at Anna, I thought, Engaged to her dream man and resigned to having bad sex for the rest of her life.
