Captain Redstar pulled Damocles into a private conference while I waited outside. The delay felt like a wasted lifetime. Uncertainty about what I’d agreed to made it worse. When Lieutenant Zacarias arrived to fulfill Redstar’s promise, I was ready to punch the man in the face.

“Problem?” he asked.

“Redstar gave me a mission. Your assistance is required,” I said. “Stop being part of the problem and be part of the solution.”

“Captain Redstar.”

“Call her whatever you want.” Time slipped away every second I argued with this man. What was his hang up? I’d thought he was a decent guy. “Where is my sister?”

Moments passed before he shook his head in resignation. “Finding her hasn’t been as easy as we thought it would be. Nothing shows up on cameras or other sensors. No detectable computer hacks. Nothing from my informants. She might be dead, Option.”

“Then why would I give a damn about this ship or anyone in it?” I asked, hoping he wouldn’t bring up Abel as a bargaining chip. Delilah could survive nearly anything. Abel was a kid, lost and alone on a ship larger than a city. That assumed he hadn’t landed in a section of the ship without atmosphere, climate control, or gravity.

“The only thing left are the untouchables,” he said.

“Why haven’t you checked there already?” I suspected the answer.

“We did, but they never share much. I sent in three teams. They came back empty handed. We concentrated our search where it would be productive,” he said. “I know, I know. It hasn’t been. You and I will get results.”

“You’re not bringing your team?” How far was he willing to go to get results? As far as a cyborg assassin? Doubtful.

“They will be staged nearby as a quick reaction force. Don’t make me use them,” he said. “They have careers and consciences.”

“Wouldn’t want your Arcadians to lose sleep at night.”

I waited until he briefed his picked team, then followed him to an armory where he changed into battered, nondescript security armor, and pulled on his helmet. “Let’s not broadcast who we are down there.”

“You read my mind.” Everything would be easier if I could trust this guy, but the more he talked, the more I doubted his loyalties. Redstar needed to watch him. I wouldn’t turn my back on the man.

This journey below decks was different. We took side passages and small lifts not rated for combat teams. If things went wrong in here, gunfire would cause structural damage.

There was a hole in the wall to ship-north, large enough to reach through if someone was dumb enough to try it. The control panel had been opened and repair dozens of times. I counted the grooves from hastily used screwdrivers. “Popular place. Have you considered repairing the vandalism?”

“We don’t bring the Protectorate propaganda teams here. Looks shabby, but this lift is solid. I’ve used it before,” Zacarias said.

“I thought no one walked among the untouchables?” I asked, suspecting the answer.

“There isn’t a clear line of demarcation. You should know that.” His expression remained unapologetic.
