Storm is quiet for the entire ride back to Philipsburg and barely looks at me while we board the cruise ship. Iâm dying to get her alone again so we can pick up where we left off, so I can pull her from whatever mental rabbit hole sheâs going down right now. But even when we get to the door of our room, she tells me sheâs going straight to the bar.
âReally?â
âYeah, Iâll shower later.â
âYou donât want to get changed first?â I ask. Man, she really doesnât want to be alone with me.
Did I read that kiss all wrong?
âIâm just really hungry,â she says, shrugging in her summer dress, the top tight against her breasts from her wet bikini underneath. âI didnât eat much at lunch.â
âOk⦠well, Iâll come with you.â
A look I canât read flashes across her face.
âI mean⦠if thatâs⦠okay?â I clarify.
âWhy wouldnât it be?â She gives me a tight smile and turns on her heel. I leave our door locked, following her like a sad puppy dog.
We end up at the same casual bar I went to alone on night one, but instead of sitting at the bar, we pick a table in the center. Or should I say, she picks a table at the center. No chance for privacy; a subtle hint to keep my distance, perhaps? I sigh, falling into the chair across from her and picking up the menu.
I can sense her gaze, but every time I look up, her eyes have flicked back down to the menu held in front of her face.
âThe cheeseburgers are good,â I say, not even remotely interested in eating right now. âI had one on the first night.â
âCool.â She nods.
When the server comes over, we order two cheeseburgers and Storm gets a Pina Colada. Iâm going to stick with beer tonight.
Without the cover of our menus, itâs painfully awkward. We donât even have our phones to keep us distracted because we agreed to leave them in our room this morningâa day off the grid and all that. But now more than ever I wish I had a newsfeed to scroll through.
Storm leans back in her chair, pretending to be fascinated by her nail cuticles, even though I know sheâs just searching for any reason not to look at me.
âListen, if I crossed a line when we were swimming beforeâ¦â I start, lost for where to go with the rest of the sentence.
Storm looks up a me, a crease between her brows.
âAnyway, we can just pretend it never happened.â
âOh,â she says, looking back at her nails. âFine.â
âI didnât mean to make it awkward between us.â
âHonestly Tanner, itâs fine,â she says again. âYou donât need to spell it out for me. You made it perfectly clear the other night when we had drinks.â
Now itâs my turn to push creases into my forehead. âWhat?â
Storm sighs. âLook, I donât know what happened today, but you donât have to worry about it. I was just a stupid girl back in high school with my wires crossed.
