The Rise of the Sporting Fraternity

Prizefighting heralded the emergence, in Britain and in its colonies and settlements, of what historians have identified as the “sporting fraternity.” This loose association of tavern owners, gamblers, criminals, and sporting promoters staged prizefights and other athletic entertainments for the amusement of the masses in cities ranging from London and Manchester to New York and Philadelphia, Toronto and Montreal, Sydney and Melbourne, and Cape Town and Calcutta. By the late 1700s and 1800s the sporting fraternity stretched around the English-speaking world, promoting a dazzling variety of sporting events on which people could gamble, including not only prizefights but also footraces through city streets (or pedestrianism, as it was known at the time), rowing races, and tournaments of tavern sports such as darts and billiards. Although the middle and upper classes often viewed the sporting fraternity as wasteful, corrupt, and irrational, its locales remained popular as haunts for the working classes and served as the primary early sites for the modernization of sport.
