Chapter 18

Emma

Our first weekend together had taught me a lot. Some of it I already had an inkling about, like I really liked spending time with Christopher. Others were a bit more of a surprise, like I really, really liked having sex with him! Like, couldn’t get enough of him.

The next weekend was more of the same. On the way home from our second weekend together, I called Valerie to tell her how great things were going. “So, I’m leaving to go home now. I just wanted to let you know.”

“Thank you,” Val said appreciatively. “So, how’s it all going?”

I didn’t know where to start, but ventured forward anyway. “Well, he’s fantastic. And I’m having the best time of my life.”

“Naturally.” She snickered. “First love is always the best time of your life. And then it fades away, and life gets in the way.” With a barely suppressed laugh, she continued, “I just want you to know that this will end, is what I’m trying to say, Emma.”

I didn’t want to think about it ending, even if she was joking. “Shut up!”

“Jokes aside, there is some truth to that,” she went on. “It’s all hot and heavy in the beginning, and then the newness tends to wear off. I’m not saying you two will break up. I’m just saying that this euphoric ride you’re both on will likely slow down a hell of a lot. I don’t want you to be blindsided if that happens.”

I could tell she was trying to be a good friend, but I didn’t want to think about the future; I wanted to continue being happy with what we had. “Thanks for the kind words, dear friend, but I think for the next little bit, it’ll continue to be a euphoric ride.”

“Yeah, for the next little bit,” she sighed. “So, this is your second weekend together. When do you think you’re going to let your parents know about your man, Emma?”

Never.

I still hadn’t told her about the age difference or that Christopher was Dad’s friend and our boss. I didn’t think she needed to know all that. No—scratch that—I didn’t want to hear what she’d say about it. I knew she’d tell me it was a bad idea and that I should call it all off. And I didn’t want to hear that.

“You know how my parents are, Valerie.” I turned onto our street and had to wrap up the call. “For now, we’re not telling anyone about us.”

“Tell me his name,” she pushed. “That way if anything happens to you, at least I’ll know who you’ve been with.”

“That would be the safest and smartest thing to do.” I knew that. But I knew I couldn’t tell her his name. “And maybe I’ll tell you sometime, but not today. I’ve just pulled up at the house, and Mom’s already heading out here to greet me,” I lied.

“Fine, but I’ll get his name out of you eventually! Talk to you later,” she said before ending the call.

Laughing at her determination, I parked the car in the garage then grabbed my bag and got out.
