Chapter Twelve
"Are you trying to sabotage this operation?"
Linc was in Wilson's face, his dark gaze intent on him. His former leader poked him in his chest to emphasize his point. Wilson ignored all that. What angered him about Linc's posture was that his shoulders blocked his view of Mareen.
Wilson didn't like having the woman out of his sight. What if she stepped on an ant mount next? Or a bird flew into her face. Or a butterfly whizzed by and caused her to stumble. Any number of things could happen that would put her in danger, and he couldn't see her, so he'd know when to step in and yank her out of harm's way.
Deep down, Wilson knew the woman was made of strong stuff. She was a Silver sister. She was the daughter of a general. But trouble appeared attached to her heels these days. He needed to be near her to bat it away.
"This isn't an operation, Lincoln."
Wilson kept his voice low. He'd already seen Scout's reaction when she'd thought Linc's courtship of her was nothing more than a military operation set up by her father. Wilson wasn't entirely sure that the men's presence on this ranch wasn't an elaborate scheme of the general's. The man had been one of the most brilliant tacticians the military ever raised. This whole situation on the ranch had his signature written all over it. Complete with sneak attacks, evasive maneuvers, and ambushes.
But was Wilson the type of man that General Silver would've wanted for one of his daughters? He'd come from nothing. The military hadn't just been the best option for him. It had been his only option.
He'd spent the first years of his life in an orphanage before they found his birth mother. She was in his life for only a heartbeat, and that had been too long.
To put it kindly, his biological mother had been a product of the streets. She'd been born there, was raised there, and she'd worked there. He'd been born when she'd only turned sixteen. Figuring out who his father was would be harder than looking for a needle in a haystack.
The first eighteen years of his life had been a fight. It made sense to keep fighting for the rest of his life. But this time with a purpose.
He'd had his enlistment papers ready months before and was in line for his birthday. The duffel bag he'd been issued during Basic Training was the closest thing he'd ever had to a home of his own. Basic Training had been a cakewalk for him. He couldn't understand the crybabies and complainers in the ranks. If this was all he'd had to do to keep a roof over his head and three square meals a day, it was nothing. And then he'd been picked by General Silver to join his President's Men team.
For a time, Wilson had wondered if it was just his name that got him that golden ticket. He'd never told the general his mother had chosen the name based on the hospital street sign where she'd delivered him.
