Ryrth felt admiration soar through his chest as he watched Brenda cut into that man’s abdomen. He wasn’t a doctor or in a position to criticize her, but he sure hoped she knew what she was doing. Then again, everyone here seemed to agree that the man wasn’t going to live if she didn’t operate.

He watched her as she continued to slit a line down the man’s abdomen, the cut leaking blood. Cringing a bit, he felt the need to look away but fought it down. Just because he was a soldier didn’t mean he couldn’t cringe away from the sight of someone being cut open. There was no adrenaline pumping through his system and no enemy, so his mind was having a difficult time watching.

“Interesting to watch.” Vroth pulled up beside him.

Ryrth glanced over at his friend who was a medic. Vroth looked fascinated by the procedure Brenda was doing. “How so?”

“She’s a daring one, that’s how. I don’t know if I’d have the guts to do a surgery out in a forest.”

“She said he would die otherwise.”

“And I’m sure she was right, although I can’t be for sure since I know nothing about human anatomy. I’m just here to heal you Kell soldiers.”

“It’ll be impressive if she can save him.”

“It’ll be impressive if she can buy him more time,” Vroth said quickly. “Because that’s what’s she’s doing. I doubt she can save him here, but she might be able to buy him time.”

Despite what happened in the end, Ryrth would be impressed, because her job was a lot harder than his own. All he had to do was shoot people, but she had to deal with peoples’ delicate organs.

He grimaced at the thought of seeing organs.

Right as he had that thought, Brenda reached a gloved hand into the man’s abdomen.

“Good grief.” He felt bile rise up in his throat.

Vroth chuckled under his breath.

Ryrth turned away. He was impressed by her skills as a medical professional, but he wasn’t sure he could sit there and watch what she was doing.

“Hand me a plasma probe. I think I’ve found the problem, and if I’m right, we just saved his life.”

Turning back because of his morbid fascination, he watched as she inserted a probe into the man’s abdomen. A man who was smiling like a dope because he was so out of it on medications. After some quick zapping sounds, Brenda finished up and used her probe to seal the man’s flesh together. The smell of burned flesh reached his nose, once more crinkling it in repulsion.

“I’m done watching.” He’d come back once she was done tending to the rest of the wounded. He didn’t need to see all this.
