Chapter Eight

On Tuesday morning, Millie didn’t know who she wanted to talk with first—Jade or Caleb. She was terrified she might learn that Jade had the time of her life while Caleb felt the date hadn’t gone well. If she talked with Caleb first and he seemed disappointed with the date, how could Millie feign ignorance of that if Jade was now head over heels for the guy? After all, Jade wasn’t known to date much, period. And, to Millie’s knowledge, she’d never dated a man like Caleb Young.

Millie herself had only ever dated one man like Caleb, and she’d married him. Jade’s mother, on the other hand, had dated quite a few men like Caleb but had ultimately thrown them over to marry the toad—Jade’s father—and later the snake. Fiona was again divorced and was dating what could only be described in Millie’s mind as the lizard. She said a silent prayer asking God’s forgiveness for her malignment of reptiles and poured herself a second cup of coffee. Her ringing phone wound up making her decision of who to talk with first.A short time later, Millie was in such a hurry to get to the pet shop that she took the elevator. As soon as the doors opened, she barreled down the hall to Hightail It! Caleb was standing at the register, and thankfully, there were no customers in the store at the moment.

“Good morning, Millie. You look beautiful as always.” He drew his brows together. “Although you’re a little flushed. Are you feeling okay?”

“I’m fine,” she said, dispensing with small talk. “Geri called.”

“Is everything all right?” Caleb came out from behind the counter and placed a hand on her shoulder. “Do you need to sit down?”

She waved away his concerns. “Perry is fine. In fact, another baby possum around the same age—Geri says he’s ten to eleven weeks—was brought in last night.”

“Is that a good thing or a bad thing?”

“It’s good. They’ll have each other. Geri told me they’d be released back into the wild together.”

“That’s great news then. Perry won’t have to wander alone. What’s the newbie’s name?”

“I asked, but Geri said they don’t name animals—or in any other way treat them as pets—when they’re releasing them back into the wild. I don’t even think she calls Perry by name.”

Caleb arched a dark brow. “What’s the other possum’s name, Millie? I know you’ve given it one.”

“Parker.”

He gave her a one-armed hug. “Did Geri say when Perry and Parker will move on to the next leg of their adventure?”

“The end of September is when they’re scheduled to be released.” She smiled. “And she said if we want to come, we can watch the release from a short distance away.”

“Want to come? We wouldn’t miss it!” He grinned. “Maybe we can pack up that picnic basket and take it with us. Thanks again for letting me borrow it. I’ll get it back to you right after work today.”

“No rush. But, um, speaking of the picnic basket, how did the date go?”

“Great.
