When the alarm sounded, I woke with a headache and a tongue that felt like it was coated in lawn clippings. But I was feeling happy and optimistic. I felt like things with CJ were on the right track again, finally. Not only that, but I felt like I’d finally managed to get out of my own way. My friends were right—it was an easy enough choice to make. I would be with CJ, and everything else would work itself out.

I showered and got dressed, thoughts of CJ never far from my mind, and went down to the hotel restaurant for breakfast. Justine and CJ were there already, at a small table near the wall. The smile CJ let loose when he saw me was almost enough to knock me off my feet.

“Hey,” he said as I approached.

“Morning!” Justine chirped.

“Hey guys,” I said. “I’ll go grab some food and be right back.”

The hotel buffet was plentiful, and I filled my plate with fruit, yogurt, muffins, and sausage. Only as I sat did I realize that I’d gotten enough food for a small army.

“Thanks,” CJ said, as he pulled a muffin off my plate, grinning.

“Go ahead. My eyes are way bigger than my stomach.”

“Seriously,” he said. “Is this the lumberjack special?”

“Shut up.”

Justine giggled.

“I have back-to-back meetings today,” CJ said. “You guys have fun in the booth.”

“Okay,” I said, disappointment making my buzz lighten just a shade. “You’ll be around for dinner?”

“Client meetings,” CJ said. He met my eye as he said it, and I could see the same disappointment there that I felt. He gave my shoulder a friendly squeeze, and stood. “I’ll see you after.”

I knew that he had to be discreet since Justine was with us, but the girly part of me had hoped for a taste of the connection we’d remade the night before.

“Have a good day, CJ!” Justine trilled as he walked away. “God, he’s cute.”

“He is,” I said, my voice low. I wanted to add, “and he’s mine,” but thought better of it.
