So, some details of the Cincinnati version of the story do check out, but only if the date is 1881, making Annie twenty-one years old instead of fifteen. The marriage date of 1882 then seems to work.

Another mystery is the origin of the stage name Annie Oakley, which was never recorded. Some sources suggest a link to the Cincinnati neighborhood of Oakley, that perhaps Annie and Frank resided there for a time during the 1870s. But there is nothing to indicate they lived there, and it is apparent that they didn’t meet until 1881. The next year, Annie was traveling with Butler’s act on tour and soon joined her husband on stage, insisting on shooting as well. The Oakley and Butler act toured with the Sells Brothers’ Circus, but Annie was such a draw herself that Butler eventually stepped aside and became her manager.
