A cramp bit deep into Ben’s abdominal area, causing his attention to wander instead of focusing on his surroundings and the trail ahead.

Ben’s knee jarred without warning and buckled as his shoe tottered and slipped on a patch of black ice. His hands shot forward as the total weight of his body crashed down on rocks and gravel that shredded his palms and knees like blocks of cheese going through a grater as his head slammed into the trail.

Ben winced as he groaned from the stunning haymaker that the ground landed squarely to his temple from the momentum of the fall.

He attempted to regain his balance on the incline, but the sky and surrounding woods began to blur and blend into one another. He had felt this feeling before and knew it wouldn’t end well. Ben thought he heard a movement in the woods off to his right. Then another loud noise, like the screaming roar he heard when waking up from nightmares when his childlike innocence was still intact.
