Alanis picked up the photo album that Gavin was opening and closing. Its cover was pink, with lace and gems, as if homemade by loving hands. Alanis hesitated to open it because she had a feeling she was going to find the evidence that Harper and Jake were a couple.

On the one hand, it would end Zane's search and give a name and face to Gavin's father, but it also complicated matters for the estate. If the book contained the evidence Zane had been searching high and low for, that Jake was the father of Harper's son and Gavin's father, it could mean a delay in Alanis going home and rebuilding her life.

Despite this, her heart swelled with hope that Zane would possibly find peace and be able to move forward with his own life, knowing Gavin's father had been an admirable, kindhearted man. Alanis handed it to Zane, who was silently watching her.

“Here, you open it. I hope it has the answers you need. If it does, though, it makes things even more confusing for me. If Jake was Gavin’s father, why a mock wedding? Why didn’t they really get married and why all the secrecy? It’s troublesome to think that my dear brother had a double life or lots of secrets; it just seemed so unlike him.”

Alanis watched as Zane’s fingers moved over the soft surface of the album. “Whoever made this really loved it. Harper loved making things like this; she had this craft box that she kept all her supplies in. Every time I turned around, she was making a Christmas ornament or earrings. Sometimes she was like a little girl in her heart and I admired it so much. I have no skill with my hands, not like that at least. You know, I realize now that your brother and my sister were such good friends, and maybe more because they were so much alike. They were both creative, open-minded, fun and free-spirited; I’m glad for whatever they had together.”

Alanis smiled at him because they were such sweet words from such a complex man. She could see the pair walking through a field of flowers together hand in hand or strolling along the beach side by side and collecting shells for a wind chime or something like that. “It’s so sad that we all lost two very special people too soon in life. I wish I could have known your sister; I bet she was such a wonderful person.”

Alanis looked into Zane’s eyes and saw the wonder in them for a moment, the awe of a brother who probably spent many years wishing he could be more carefree and free-spirited. Alanis knew this because she felt that way many times when she was around Jake.

“She was wonderful, and no matter what was happening in her life, she always had a kind word for everyone she met. It was a gift to be around her, and at times I felt jealous of it. She put the sunshine in the day.
