TWENTY-ONE

ANNA

Paul was so frustrating. And he was driving me crazy with his attitude. I didn’t see the point in trying to play happy families in front of Noreen, but I also didn’t want her to know that I was speaking to a lawyer and getting ready to divorce her son. Not yet. I still wanted this place sold so I could get my share of the profits.

I’d dressed up a bit today because I was going to meet with my lawyer and Thornton later. Seeing as I was on the other side of the house now, I had to track Paul down to let him know I was leaving, but that I fully expected him to continue getting things assessed here. I knew Noreen was happy to do it, but Paul needed to take some responsibility too. It was our property after all.

As I got close to his room, I could hear him talking, and I wondered who it was he was speaking to. I crept closer so I could hear better. The door was partially open, so it made it easier to overhear.

“—love it here. I really want you here, sweetheart. It’ll be so much safer for you.”

My jaw ticked. He was talking to that tramp. I had half a mind to barge in and make him hang up with her.

“Yeah, we’re selling it. I know, but look at it this way, I’ll be able to give you money, and after I divorce Anna, we can sell the house in the city too, and with that money we can get a place, and set you up in your own building for your tattoo shop, won’t that be nice? Maybe we’ll find a place where you can do tattoos and I can paint.”

Wait. Did he just say he was selling my house? And he was giving the money to that bitch?

Oh, that was it. I’d had enough. Clearly, Marianne needed to be put back in her place.

Instead of barging into his room and fighting with him, I left him to his conversation. It would be one of his last with her if I had any say about it. I was going to go see her and have it out with her.

I returned to my room quickly, to grab my dress coat and gloves. I headed down the stairs and set my coat and gloves on the back of the sofa, then put on a smile as I walked into the kitchen. “Good morning, Noreen.”

“Good morning, oh, look at you. You look so fancy; did you dress up for Paul?” she asked, giving me the sweetest smile.

“Well, I thought I’d make an effort. He’s preoccupied, though, so I thought I’d run into the city, do a little shopping. Would you like to come?” I asked, praying she’d say no. My plans wouldn’t work if she said yes.

“Oh dear, I’d love to, but remember we have that estate person coming to assess the value of James’s collections.”

“Oh, that’s right, I’d forgotten. Do you need me to stay?”

“Of course not, dear.
