Chapter 24
CORAL
A bunch of fucking idiots was what those guys were, and I fell right into their trap. Probably just like every other female who crossed their paths and spread her legs at the snap of their fingers.
I was a fucking idiot. That’s all there was to it. What had I been thinking to let Ennis slide my PJ bottoms down so he could go to town on me? What kind of smart girl does that?
Was I trying to prove something? Prove that I was cool—no longer the one who sat in the corner of the school cafeteria with the other outcasts?
I wanna prove myself so badly, I’ll let you eat me…
What if Randall found out? I mean, not the gory details but just that I’d been… canoodling… with the guys. He’d lose all respect for me, and most likely fire my pathetic ass.
I could see it now.
Sorry, Coral, but we can’t have you fucking around with the clients. Lunch is one thing but pulling down your pants is another…
I punched my pillow.
Why, why, why?
And how did I end up putting on a goddamn show for Hugh? What the hell was that all about?
Every fiber of my being had been screaming get your ass back to bed. That nothing good was going to come of messing around with Ennis, or any of the guys for that matter, late at night on a bus tearing across America’s highways.
But the stress of recent days and the strangeness of my situation rendered me unable—actually, unwilling—to resist.
Plain and simple, I wanted it. I wanted Ennis, the beautiful, vulnerable, driven, guilt-ridden man, to make me feel good. I wanted to forget where we were—even who we were—for just a little while.
It’s fine he’d whispered, as he’d laid me back on the bench.
And it had been fine, at least initially. So fine. Like nothing I’d ever experienced fine. The few other guys who’d gone down on me in my past had been abject failures compared to Ennis, with their slobbery spit and general sexual incompetence.
All thoughts of consequences had evacuated my brain. And consideration of the past or future—well, they didn’t exist at that moment in time.
I didn’t say no because I didn’t fucking want to.
That’s how you end up messing around with a hot client. I’m sure it happened all the time.
But it didn’t happen to me all the time. Or ever, for that matter. It’s why I was Going Places, according to Randall. I knew how to behave. Get the job done. Make clients happy.
I guess I did just make a couple clients happy, now that I thought about it.
The very clients I was supposed to be babysitting, keeping them on the straight and narrow, and ensuring they didn’t lose their record contract.
After all, didn’t my employment depend on their employment?
If Dirty Bandit were out of business, well, Coral James would be out of business, too.
If I fucked this up, our firm’s name would be mud. And I’d be out of a job. It didn’t matter how much Randall liked or respected me.
