The wall rose another meter and a half above her head, but Torrin was fairly certain that if she took a running start, she could grab hold of the top and pull herself over. The sentry had gone by a few moments before and had actually nodded to her as she stood inspecting the wall. Security really was lax. Some of Jak’s complaints about the militia’s lack of professionalism made more sense, but she wasn’t going to complain since it was to her benefit. She grinned mirthlessly; the sentry’s familiarity also made it less likely that she’d be shot on sight if caught.
Backing up a little ways, she gave herself enough room to get up to a full sprint before launching herself in the obstacle’s direction. Desperation gave her a major adrenaline rush. She was able to easily grab the wall’s top with room to spare, and her momentum carried her almost all the way over. With a deft twist of her body, she flipped her legs to the side and landed on her feet on the ground inside the wall.
On base, the night was dark. There were fewer lights than in the city and her eyes strained to see anything in the gloom. Relying on memory, she started off toward the near barracks, hoping that the more seasoned militiawomen were still housed there. As a junior officer, Jak should have her own room in those barracks. Majors and above would be entitled to one of the freestanding homes on the far edge of the base.
Her eyes and ears peeled for sentries or any indication that her presence had been detected, she skulked her way past silent buildings barely visible in the darkness. Torrin had spent a number of years living on base, and she wasn’t surprised to see that very little had changed.
Fortunately, she was still friendly with a large number of militia-women, not all of whom had heard about her troubles with Jak. Earlier that evening, when she’d returned to her flat to find all of Jak’s belongings gone, Torrin had been ready to crawl back inside a bottle. The remnants of her headache convinced her there might be a better way.
There was really only one place Jak would go, especially now that Nat was gone. It hadn’t taken long to confirm that she had enlisted with the militia. Torrin had been pleasantly surprised to find out that she’d been given the rank of captain. Her pride on Jak’s behalf had only lasted a moment however. It seemed Jak was reporting directly to Tanith. That was bad news. Tanith would only fill Jak with garbage about how terrible Torrin was. The only terrible thing Torrin had done was not get psychotic Breena off her fast enough. Jak’s assignment to Tanith’s command made it even more crucial that she get to her lover and explain what had gone wrong. It shouldn’t have been a surprise that Jak wasn’t making it easy.
The flat had echoed when she’d entered it that evening.
