WAAF Mess, RAF Bottesford

23 January 1943, 3:15 p.m.

“I suppose they do their best,” Amy said apologetically, looking at the tray of food in front of her.

Maggie couldn’t tell whether Amy was making excuses or comforting herself. The watery mashed potatoes and gray peas on her plate accompanied a thin slice of what Maggie assumed was corned beef but looked more like shoe leather a dog had already chewed.

One by one every WAAF in the mess did the same thing: stared at her tray, sighed, then picked up her fork and dutifully ate.

“At least the tea here is drinkable,” Maggie said. “Remember during training? They served something with the milk already mixed in. It was orange.” She shuddered.

Maggie and Amy looked quite prim in their blue skirts, compared to the others sitting at the long tables. Mechanics wore greasy coveralls, and some others wore trousers so they could do more energetic jobs.

“So you and Alec Thomas? What’s happening there?” Amy asked over her tea, watching Maggie closely.

Maggie nearly choked on the beef. She avoided Amy’s eyes, wishing she didn’t blush. “Nothing. I haven’t spoken to him since New Year’s Eve.”

“That’s not what Agnes says.”

Agnes had heard, she must have. Maggie knew she was going to be in so much trouble. “What do you mean?” She tried to sound light and not strangled with fear.

“She says he’s been sniffing around trying to find out what your roster is.”

“Really?” This was news.

“Take it as a compliment, Maggie. Alec Thomas could put his boots under the bed of any girl at this station, but he seems fixated on you. I say make the most of it.”

Maggie was sure she was bright red from the heat she felt in her face. “Hilarious,” she said flatly.

“It’s not a joke. You haven’t been at the pub to see how Katie has been throwing herself at him for the last month. But he only seems interested in talking about you. I say make hay while the sun shines.”

She wanted to ask more, but she also didn’t want Amy Snee to think she cared two hoots about who Alec talked to at the pub.

“Alec Thomas is nothing but trouble. Katie can have him.”
