CHAPTER THIRTEEN
* * *
NAAMAN CHUCKLED AFTER ROSEMARY AND FREDA WERE back in the house. âYou sure played that up, Levina.â
âIt was great fun to watch their expressions.â Levina smiled. âShame on us.â She sighed. âI hope our children will always be as happy with their spouses as we are at this very moment.â
âI pray for that too.â
âWhen are you going to talk to Adam? It looks like the last of the guests are leaving, except for our immediate family.â
âIâd rather go home and snuggle up with you.â
âI thought we were going to fly a kite.â
Naaman dabbed his tongue to his first finger, then held it up. âWind is dying down. I think snuggling sounds better.â
âTalk to Adam. Make things right, and see if you can find out what is going on with him.â Levina grinned. âThen home to snuggle.â
Naaman couldnât remember the last time he felt this content, but the situation with Adam lingered like a dark cloud above them. Naaman needed to talk to him, but he had little hope that Adam would give him the time of day just yet. Pushing him might be the wrong thing to do. But Levina sure did seem worried about him, for reasons that seemed to have nothing to do with Naaman.
Naaman crossed the yard and met Adam and Hannah. âIt was a gut service today.â
Adam nodded but didnât make eye contact with his father.
âSo glad youâre here, Naaman.â Hannah gave Naaman a hug, and over her shoulder Naaman could see Adam scowl.
âDanki, Hannah.â He eased out of the hug. âWould you mind if I talk to Adam for a few minutes?â
âOf course not.â Hannah smiled, but before she even walked away, Adam spoke up.
âWe donât have anything to talk about.â He folded his arms across his chest.
âMaybe no, maybe yes.â Naaman held his position as he looped his thumbs beneath his suspenders.
Hannah stepped toward Adam, and Naaman saw tears in her eyes. âTalk to your father, Adam.â
âThis is not your business, Hannah.â
Naaman was shocked by the way Adam spoke to his wife, and as Hannahâs cheeks turned a rosy shade of pink, Naaman was wishing Adam was still of the age to be taken behind the woodshed for a good spanking.
âPlease, Adam.â Hannah dabbed at her eyes. âYour father is a wise man. Whatever is bothering you, or if youâre angry at himâ or meâor . . . I just donât know, but maybe you should talk to him.â
âItâs all right, Hannah. Iâm sure Adam will come to me when heâs ready.â
A tear rolled down her cheek. âIt might be too late by then,â she said as she turned and ran back toward the house.
âAdam?â Naaman took a few steps closer, but Adam clenched his jaw tight and stared at the ground. âI know you are angry with me, and I donât blame you. I also know that there is something else going on with you. Your mother senses this, and I can see it now too.â Naaman paused with a sigh.
