Chapter 24

Scott

Saturday, 8:47 p.m.

“They usually leave to get food and water soon—only one or two stay,” David said quietly to Scott as they continued to shovel the resin. “That’s the best time—if you’re going to try anything.”

Scott nodded at David. He saw Cody maneuvering the lift over to a new area of the cave ceiling. Scott stopped to wipe his face and glanced over at the guards. They were sitting together talking; all four had sidearms, pistols in holsters on their hips. The larger one of the group still had the flame weapon on, sitting forward in his seat with the tanks on his back, more watchful than the others.

“What the hell are you looking at, boy?” he barked at Scott through his mask. “You ain’t getting paid to take breaks.”

The other men looked up, one laughing .

Scott pulled his shirt down from his mouth. “Can I please get some water?” He turned towards them and put both hands on the top of the shovel. Scott was just short of six feet tall but muscular. A former soccer player and bodybuilder, he’d always been able to handle himself. Cody had to rescue him once from a fight he’d picked outside of a football stadium with a group of fans from the opposing team. Scott had been drunk but had managed to lay one guy out and was on top of another when a girl smashed a beer bottle against his head, knocking him out cold. Cody arrived just in time to drag him away.

“We’ll look into it,” the man scoffed, muffled through his mask.

Scott turned and got back to work. They were all coughing regularly now from the fumes.

After a few minutes, he noticed three of the four men stand up from their chairs.

“I got this—just hurry up,” the larger man said to the other guards before they walked back through the small tunnel, exiting the chamber.

Scott turned to David and whispered, “How long are they usually gone?”

“About thirty minutes,” David answered.

Cody had noticed the men leave as well. He shot a sideways glance at Scott, who winked back.

Cody maneuvered the lift lower, to the side of the chamber about ten feet off the ground and watched, periodically shoveling the resin, giving the appearance that he was working.

Scott turned to the remaining guard who was still seated. “Hey, I really need to go.”

The guard finished swallowing from the bottle of water he was drinking. “You’re a needy bitch, aren’t you?”

Scott just stared back. Cody stopped working and watched from the lift platform.

“The bucket is over there” The guard motioned toward the conveyor by the larger wheeled containers. “Be quick about it.”

Scott had already seen it. It was about twenty yards from where the guard was sitting.

He started to walk towards it, carrying his shovel.
