Harriet Goes to Ostend

Harriet rushed into breakfast for she was very excited. Today she was going to Ostend. Her Mummy was taking her in the car to Dover and then they were to get on the ferry. The car could go on the ferry too, so they could drive around Belgium. It would be great. Wearing her little pink shorts and a blue T-shirt, Harriet jumped into the car. It was a warm day in August. She had her bucket and spade with her and hoped she could spend many long days on the beach. The sands at Ostend are wide and golden. It should be a lot of fun.

The car rumbled onto the ferry. Harriet could get out and have a stroll around and there would still be plenty of time to have an orange juice in the cafe and read her magazines. When the ferry arrived at Ostend, Harriet’s Mummy drove them off the boat. It was lovely to be in a foreign country. The weather was warm and the sun was shining brightly. Harriet could see the trams going down the wide streets, and the flowers in the roundabouts were colourful and bright.

The hotel they were staying in was a modern building in the main street. Harriet was keen to go inside and see her room. She was sharing with Mummy. The Madame of the hotel greeted them warmly and offered them a cup of tea. After they had had a wash and sorted out their cases, they sat on the street at a table outside the hotel.

Madame Weetenhuis chatted with them for a while and then said she must prepare the evening meal for the guests. Harriet and her Mummy had a quick stroll around town and arrived back for dinner at seven. This is a lovely place thought Harriet and I am so near the sea. I will be spending a lot of time playing on the sand.

The next day Harriet and her Mummy met another family on holiday. They were Belgian and had a daughter who was nine years old, just a bit older than Harriet. This little girl was called Marianne. Harriet and Marianne got on well together and they went to the beach together. First they stopped off at a sweet shop on the promenade. The smell inside the shop was scrumptious. It was like apples and spices, vanilla essence and ice cream cones all rolled into one. There was the smell of coffee too from the cafes and the sea air, but nothing was like the sweet shop.

She loved the shops in Ostend. In a gift shop she bought a little boy doll dressed in a blue satin outfit and Marianne bought a pink girl doll. Harriet’s Mummy knew they couldn’t spend all day in the shops so hurried them onto the beach. They hired some deckchairs and a windbreak and Harriet changed into her bathing costume.

Marianne and Harriet ran down to the sea and played in the shallows. Harriet’s Mummy stayed in her deckchair and read a book.
