CHAPTER TWELVE

A rocket launcher?

Rocks and debris tumbled. Cooper’s ears rang. He covered Hadley, careful not to hurt her, until he was sure everything had settled. But he couldn’t wait until the dust had cleared. They had to get out of here.

Had the assassin seen their escape?

“Hadley, are you okay?” In reply, words formed on her lips, but he couldn’t hear them.

She tried to push up so he let her, then grabbed her hand.

“Run!” He wasn’t sure if Hadley heard him, but she ran with him, understanding his actions.

He led her deeper into thick woods, around rocky outcroppings and evergreens. Cooper didn’t risk stopping or looking back. Now they were truly on the run as they had never been.

He wanted to punch something. To kick himself, but he couldn’t stop to take the time. Instead, he let the twigs, needles and branches that continually slapped him in the face punish him. He’d take it like a man. He deserved it, but he tried to shield Hadley from any thorns or branches as they ran.

They’d lingered too long in one place.

Cooper had scouted the area to within at least a square mile of the berm to see if the man after her had closed in on them by tracking them through the night. That would be the only way he could have covered that much ground.

“Give me the pack,” he said through gasps.

“Why?”

“Just do it, but don’t stop moving.” Hadley let the pack slide off as she whipped past a tree.

Cooper urged her forward through the thick ferns and tree trunks. They had lost their lead.

Now. To get it back.

He continued jogging, pushing through the thick foliage as fast as possible, while he dug in the backpack. There. He yanked out the tracker.

“What are you doing?” Hadley glanced over her shoulder and tripped.

Cooper caught her, held her up and urged her forward. “Losing our tail. Wait here.”

He ran in the opposite direction and then came back to her and they continued on. “I left it over there. Maybe that will lead him away from us.”

“But I thought—”

Yeah, he’d been an idiot to think he could somehow snag that assassin and make him talk. “Change of plans.”

Add to that, he had the sick feeling that the man would continue to find them with or without that tracker. In fact, Cooper could almost wish for the cover of darkness at this moment. That would be an advantage to him. They had no choice but to make every effort to lose the assassin now and for good. Cooper had been arrogant, thinking he could draw the man to them and get the upper hand.

His overconfidence had almost gotten them killed.

Hadley stopped and bent over her thighs, gasping for breath. “What was that, Coop?”

“A rocket launcher.”

“Are you kidding me? I rank rocket launcher status?”

“Evidently.” Who was Hadley’s father? Who was Hadley that someone would go to this much trouble to make sure she was killed? “But we need to keep going. We have to gain our lead back.
