EPILOGUE

CLOSE TO DUSK on Christmas Day, Martin stood at the kitchen window looking out on the snow-covered yard. The flurries had finally stopped, but not before dumping a good five inches on Fox Creek roads. Luckily he’d seen the snowplows out a half hour ago, and as long as they’d removed the accumulation, they could lay down salt. Jude would get home safely.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”

The voice from behind him didn’t startle him. In fact, he’d grown quite used to Aurora’s soothing words. “Yes, it is. Imagine what it must be like up by the lake tonight.”

“They always get the worst of it.” After a few moments, she said, “What’s wrong, Marty? You seem out of sorts all of a sudden. It was a delicious dinner.”

“Oh yeah, it was great. You ladies outdid yourselves.”

“Then what? I know your grandchildren are happy. Lizzie has tried on her new sweaters, and Wesley is sleeping on the couch, exhausted. Alex and Daniel are cuddled up like the newlyweds they are.”

He smiled. “All’s right with the world this Christmas. But I wish Carrie were here. She’s never missed Christmas. And now Jude is off at the hospital...”

“No, she’s not,” came a voice from the doorway. “She’s home.”

“Jude!” Aurora rushed over to greet her. “We’re glad you made it home before it became totally dark. How did things go?”

The smile on Jude’s face should have told them everything they needed to know. “Liam’s awake,” she said. “He’s talking and smiling and making plans.”

“That’s great, Jude,” Martin said. “What plans?”

“He’s going to ask me to marry him, and I’m going to say yes.”

Aurora hugged her. Martin shook his head. “What’s with you kids today? In my day a man just came out and asked, or he didn’t. He didn’t make plans to ask.” The words were accompanied by a twinkle in Martin’s eyes.

“It’s fine, Daddy,” Jude said. “I figure he just didn’t think a hospital room was very romantic, so he set up the proposal for New Year’s Eve, wherever we may be.”

He opened his arms. “Come here, baby girl. I couldn’t be losing you to a nicer fella.” As he hugged her, he focused on Aurora’s comforting smile, as if she were saying, Now see? Everything is perfect, or nearly.

“Where will you two live?” he asked. “I hope you’ll stay here. What will you do with all the animals? Have you told Wesley yet?”

“Details, Daddy,” she said, laughing. “It’ll all work out.”

She stepped away from him. “I’m going to go tell Wes now.”

“How will he take the news?” Martin asked.

Jude grinned. “He’s been wanting Liam to move in with us for weeks now.”

When she’d left the room, Martin walked up to Aurora.

“Get ready for another wedding, Marty.”

He gave her a great big smile. “Two down and one to go.”
