Chapter Eleven

LEVI HAD TO ADMIT HE was pretty impressed with Lola’s cooking on the fly. How on earth had she developed those cooking skills? He was desperate to know. And he was desperate to slip back to her trailer to talk to her some more. Would she welcome it, or would approaching her push him away?

Hell, he didn’t know if he’d make it past the next round. If he was eliminated, that would be it—he’d never see her again. He needed to carpe diem while he could. He slipped out the trailer door, making sure there was no one else around looking, and walked five trailers down to Lola’s, knocking lightly.

“Enter,” a voice said.

He walked in and stood by the door again, waiting for an invitation to sit. This time she wasn’t on the sofa.

“Lola?” he called out.

“Back here.”

He followed her voice and found her sprawled out on a bed. He hadn’t even investigated his own trailer enough to know there was a bed there. Well, this could be awkward.

“Hey,” he said, looking down at the floor. “Congratulations on your exceptional debut. Looks like you’ve made quite an impression on the judges.”

“You think?”

“I don’t just think, I know. Judges on food shows don’t blow smoke up your ass. If they don’t like something, you’re gonna hear it and hear it loud.”

She shrugged. “Cool. Still a lot of hurdles to overcome though.”

A quick glance around the room told him there was no place to sit. He took it upon himself and perched on the smallest corner of the bed possible. Otherwise, it was too weird to tower over her.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Yeah, sure,” she said.

“How did you develop your mad cooking skills?”

“I could ask you the same thing.”

“But I asked you first.”

“But I have a greater need for answers right now than you do.”

He shrugged. He couldn’t argue with that.

“So after... after everything...” He pursed his lips for a moment and continued. “I was a bit of a lost soul. I’d hurt the person who mattered most to me in the world but was told I had to hurt her to do the right thing.” He shook his head. “I felt like the worst person on the planet. And seriously, I was a kid. I wasn’t prepared to handle this kind of emotional burden. So, I kind of shut down. I decided to do some sort of penance for my actions and started working the worst kinds of jobs. It was like those monks who self-flagellate, lashing their backs with heavy chains. Only instead, I took a job cleaning out porta-potties.”

Lola’s eyes grew wide. “You’re kidding, right?”

He shook his head. “If only. I wasn’t particularly imaginative in coming up with good punishments, was I?”

“I’d have said weeding would have been ample enough torment. Cleaning out portable toilets was way beyond the call of duty.”

“I should have solicited that advice.” He chuckled. “’Cause, well, yeah. It was a pretty shitty job.” He grinned.

“Literally.” She stuck out her tongue like she was gagging.
