Every year we receive emails from runners reporting frustration in the early miles of a race because they had to weave in and out of crowds of other runners. This scenario can lead some athletes to run faster than planned in those early miles—fueled by anger or annoyance or a desire to escape the crowd—which often sabotages the rest of their race.

In addition to interrupting the fluidity of your race performance, crowds make some of us downright claustrophobic. Bigger marathons have thousands of runners; the New York City Marathon has more than 50,000! Some runners thrive on that kind of energy. However, if you know in advance that being surrounded by hordes of other people puts you on edge, it may be best to choose a smaller race (under 2,000 runners).
