After a few tense moments, Trudy finally lowered her shotgun and nodded at the porch. “Fine. I’ll talk. But it’s going to have to be out here. I don’t let strangers into my house. Not after what happened to Billy.”

That made me wonder if she believed there had been strangers involved in his death. But I didn’t ask those questions. Not yet.

I could respect her decision to talk to us on the porch. In fact, I was simply happy that she was talking to us at all.

Riley and I sat on a bench swing while Trudy sat in a ratty-looking wicker chair across from us. She set her gun on the cement patio beside her, almost as if she wanted to remind us that the weapon was there and that she could use it if necessary.

The thought wasn’t especially comforting, but I told myself that Trudy was just paranoid. Anyone who’d had a family member murdered would be.

“What do you want to know?” Trudy’s words sounded clipped and slightly uncultured.

She definitely had a gruffness about her that surprised me. For some reason, I’d pictured someone petite and quiet—probably because I’d known a Trudy in elementary school and that’s what she’d been like.

Riley gave me a glance, letting me know that I could take the lead.

I cleared my throat, hoping I didn’t blow this. “We’ve come across some new evidence, and as soon as I heard that this case hadn’t been solved, I was immediately interested.”

Trudy glanced at Riley. “Is she a PI or something? I heard law firms hire them sometimes.”

He offered a stiff nod. “Something like that.”

“What kind of new evidence did you find exactly?” A good dose of skepticism still stained her gaze.

“We found some pictures, although we’re not clear what the photos are of or why they’re important,” Riley said.

“Pictures?” A spark of interest lit her gaze. “Can I see them?”

“Of course.” I pulled them from my purse and handed them to her.

I watched as Trudy flipped through them, trying to see if any of them seemed to trigger anything inside her.

I hoped this was the moment we might get some answers.
