Chapter 12

The routine changed for the Lapp family after the first of September. As soon as chores were done and breakfast was over, Noah harnessed one of the horses to the buggy. The boys left for school.

The house was so quiet, it took a few days for Hal to get used to the boys not coming in and out all day. She even missed Daniel slamming a door.

On Saturday morning in mid September, Hal helped the children gather in the smaller pie pumpkins from the edge of the cornfield. They stacked the bounty at the end of the driveway. In a couple weeks, the large Jack O Lantern pumpkins would turn orange in time for Halloween sales. Emma made a For Sale Sign with the line No Sunday Sales on it. When Hal asked about that, Emma said it didn’t hurt to remind English people that Plain people do not do business on Sunday ever.

That was the day before Emma’s birthday. Right after lunch, Hal talked Emma and the boys into going fishing in the pond. She didn’t have to do much talking to persuade them after she got the milk can seat out of the car trunk. Hal explained her idea to the children. The first one to catch a fish could sit on the seat until the next one caught a fish. Noah carried the milk can seat to the pond bank while Daniel went after the shovel to dig worms. Emma took along a can for the worms and the poles. Farmers were thankful for the dry weather now that harvest was in full swing but that meant nightcrawlers were down deep in the earth so the smaller worms would have to do.

Hal watched until the kids were out of sight behind the barn on their way to the pond. She managed to convince the gentlest horse, Ben, to come to her by bribing him with a carrot. The over friendly mare, Molly, horned in and tried to take the carrot away. Hal had learned to be firm with her ever since Molly pushed her into the pond. At least, being firm worked for Hal while she was on one side the fence and Molly was on the other.

She hitched Ben up to the carriage by herself. She was quite proud of the feat even though it took her awhile. Hal had the feeling Ben was as nervous as she was. After all, she hadn’t been out alone with him or driven him since her scream frightened him into a run for his life.

When Hal snapped the lines on his back, Ben moved fast enough to blur the ground under his hooves, causing the carriage to creak. Guess he was ready for a run, but she wasn’t. Hal held back on the lines to get the horse to slow down to a slow trot so she could enjoy the scenery. A gust of wind blew through the open door, whipping the fringes of hair sticking out from under her prayer cap.
