Nick sat in his suite at the Oyster Bay Hotel and looked out the window on the Atlantic. It didn’t seem possible that in only a month he would be standing on that very sand, reciting his vows to Lori.

And what were the vows? Had they even discussed that? Was he expected to write something? Knowing Lori, she’d provide something, or offer to, but that wasn’t how he wanted it to be.

He decided to ask her next time they talked. So far, since she’d gone back to New York, they’d played phone tag and exchanged a handful of text messages. It wasn’t much different than when they were both in the city, he supposed. She was busy with her life. He was busy with his. They came together for dinners. The nights were short and the mornings started early. On weekends that they both weren’t fielding emails from work, they usually had various events to attend, ones that he’d rather skip. But Lori liked to socialize. “You never know,” she would say. “We don’t want to miss out on any opportunities.”

He made a note on his phone to ask about the vows. But not right now. Right now he needed to blow off some of this stress. Get out of this room. Give his eyes a rest from staring at these spreadsheets. Burn off the burger that was settled in his stomach. He’d had one every day since he’d checked in to the hotel. If he kept it up, they’d end up naming it after him.

He could only imagine what Lori would have to say about that.

But, considering she was in New York and he was here, he wouldn’t have to.

He changed and went down to the lobby, knowing as he pushed through the doors onto Main Street that he should probably go down to the shore, take a jog on the waterfront. But even the lull of the waves didn’t appeal to him tonight. Instead, he thought of the park, with the pond.

And Chloe.

She wouldn’t be there. Not now. It was nearly eight at night. She was probably home, wherever home was. Or out with friends.

Or out on a date.

He swallowed hard. That idea shouldn’t bother him. It really shouldn’t. Not anymore than it should bother him that she seemed to have cooled to him, and that maybe that was his doing. He hadn’t exactly been friendly to her the other night at the restaurant, instead chatting with the other women, because it had been…easier that way.

Because it had seemed like the right thing to do. Because he didn’t know what else to do.

Telling himself that he could jog where he pleased and that there was little chance of her being at the park in the evening, when her routine seemed to be mornings, before work, he made his way to the edge of town and cranked up his speed where the trail parted on the grass that led to the pond.

He hadn’t even rounded the hill when he saw her.
