Chapter 4: Basic Major and Minor Chords
In this chapter, you will learn,
The chords in the A family
The chords in the D family
The chords in the G family
The chords in the C family
The A family basic chords are composed of A, D and E. These are called the “major chords”. In fingering chords, you should always use your fingertip’s “ball”; positioning it behind the fret. Your fingers should be arched to make sure that your fingertips are perpendicular to the neck. Short left-hand fingernails are helpful in pressing the strings all the way to the fingerboard.
When it comes to fingering the three major chords; the strings with an X mark are a disregard. A strike should be on the top five A chord strings and the top four D chord strings. The selective striking of the strings may feel hard at first but practice gets you used to this technique.
When it comes to strumming, your right hand should find use with either your thumb or a pick. Using your fingernails’ back with a brushing motion directed to the floor, results in a strum from the chord’s lowest-pitched stringto its highest-pitched string. A progression is merely a series of played chords. It is recommended to use a down-stroke in playing the guitar. A four times strum on each chordgives a vertical music line that comes from the strum symbols. This line is called a bar line, and its only purpose is to separate music into sections called measures. Through measures, musical notes become easier to read. Your brain would be receiving small chunks of musical information, making it easier to play. However, a bar line does not dictate the speed of your music. You should try to maintain a constant strumming speedwhen playing.
Your first plays should be slow and steady so that you could get used to a simple beat. In time, your confidence will boost, and you could handle speeding up now. Fingering and switching chords will eventually become easy as you practice playing daily. Continuously playing the guitar would cause calluses at the player’s fingertips but you will start building control and strength with your left arm. By now you should be proud because your knowledge of the A family’s open chords are enough to make you play the “kumbaya” song.
The D family chords consist of D, Em, G, and A. “E minor” is the pronunciation for “Em”. As you can see, two basic chords in the D family (D and A) are also a part of the A family. Only two chords are unfamiliar now because the previous section lectured you on how to play A and D. Since half the job is already done, you would only need to study the other two chords and you would be familiar with the entire D family. The Beatles have a song called “Here Comes the Sun”which can be played using only the D-family chords. The term “minor”distinguishes the chord quality type from the sound of the major chord. You describe this as sounding scary, mournful, or just sad.
