When should you move to the next position?

When you can play it all the way through at at least 80 BPM without making a single mistake, hesitating, or looking at a diagram. In short, when your brain AND your fingers have the entire position memorized.

Here are step-by-step instructions for playing position 1:

Begin by placing your middle finger on the 3rd fret of the low E string. Play that note (G). It’s the first note of the position.

Next, without lifting up your middle finger, place your pinky finger on the 5th fret of the low E string. Play that note (A). That’s the second note.
