Christine Sterling’s “Exotic” China City opened in 1938 and was destroyed by fire in 1949.

The original Chinatown was demolished to make way for downtown’s Union Station, the “Last of the Great Railway Stations” in the United States when completed in 1939.

Gin Ling Way marked the New Chinatown that Chinese businessmen financed in 1938. It survives to this day.

As if the region wasn’t already suffering, 115 people were killed in 1933 when the Long Beach earthquake struck the area. Of the hundreds of brick buildings that collapsed in Long Beach and nearby Compton, schools were among the worst affected. Luckily, the temblor struck at 6 p.m., when most schools were empty.
