What had he done?

He’d totally messed up everything.

Atlas had watched the storm clouds gather in Hermione’s eyes and he hadn’t done anything to calm the waters. The reasons—the good reasons—had all been there in his head. But had he used the right words? No.

It seemed that whenever he was in close proximity to Hermione that his mind and mouth had a glitchy disconnect. There were so many things he wanted to say to her, but for one reason or another he’d kept them to himself.

But he couldn’t let things stay like this. He couldn’t stand the thought of Hermione being upset with him and jumping to the wrong conclusions. He had to fix things or at least try.

After apologizing to Adara, he rushed to the hallway, finding no sign of her. Would she go back to her office? Or would she walk out the front door and keep on going?

Stop. He was getting ahead of himself. After all, she was an employee of the resort. Her address was on record. He could easily track her down if he was so inclined.

Who was he kidding? He was most definitely inclined. He just wasn’t sure it was a good idea. After the kiss last night, he knew the volatile attraction ran both ways. He also knew Hermione was in denial of their chemistry. Whether they wanted to admit it or not, it existed.

If he was to go after her now and things got heated—if their attraction spiraled out of control, she’d never forgive him. He wouldn’t forgive himself. Things needed to cool off, and then they could talk like rational adults.

After calming down, hopefully she’d see the merits of his plan. She was overextending herself. At the same time, it impressed him the way she was worried about those around her and asked for nothing for herself. There weren’t many people that were so selfless.

He returned to his suite where Adara was checking messages on her phone. She glanced up when he entered the room. She slipped her phone in her pocket.

“I didn’t handle that very well,” he said.

“Did you have a chance to speak to her?”

He shook his head. “I didn’t catch up with her.”

He sunk down into the chair. “When I came to Ludus I knew it wasn’t going to be fun, but I didn’t expect things to keep getting worse at every turn.”

Adara paused as though not sure she should say what was on her mind. When her phone buzzed, she checked it and then returned it to her pocket.

“It’s okay,” he said. “Just say it.”

“I think you should let Hermione decide how much she can handle. She’ll ask for help before she does anything to damage the resort. She loves this place. It’s her home—her family. And we won’t let her fail. We’ll help her every step of the way.”

It sounded nice, but he wasn’t sure it was based in reality. “Even though it would be above and beyond everyone’s duties?”

“Even then. This group pulls together to help each other.
