Chapter 6

HOURS later they sat in the farmhouse across the table from Praetorian. He looked at the numbers on the paper in front of him that tallied the number of men the Nazis had deployed to the blast site.

“This is a pitiful response,” he said, placing the papers, one at a time, into the wood stove. “Der Führer must be spread rather thin between here and his Atlantic wall. We are going to have an easy go of the prison break.”

“We can’t be sure. Maybe they’ll beef up security now that this has happened.” Matthew stood and paced to the other side of the room.

“Especially so soon after we blew the road.” Ruth took a sip of the bitter coffee. “We may need to step back a bit and let them think the bridge was our final mission. We don’t want them reinforcing while we’re planning something so astronomical as freeing more than a hundred prisoners.”

Praetorian sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. “It’s still weeks away. We haven’t finalized all of the identifications yet.”

“I don’t think we need to push the schedule up,” Matthew clarified, “we just need to not plan any major damage between now and the breakout. Even if they beef up now, they may lower their guard by then.”

Praetorian nodded. “Good point.”

Ruth stood and limped to the sink to dump her coffee cup. She went into the bathroom and sat on the lip of the tub to look at her heel. She’d rinsed it twice, but she feared infection. It still looked okay. It just hurt now that the adrenaline had stopped raging through her body.

She heard the kitchen door open just as she stepped into the room and saw Prudence enter. “Beautiful job, Prudence,” Ruth said. “We almost got seen. When that swine looked over the railing, Matthew was crouching right beneath him!”

“That was crazy,” Prudence said. She grabbed the kettle off of the counter by the stove and filled it with water. “I was worried he’d look and see the white envelope.”

Matthew pushed his chair back and stood. “He would have if I hadn’t grabbed it. The bright moon was not our friend tonight.”

“The timing wasn’t up to us, or else we never would have done it tonight. It might as well be daylight out there,” Praetorian said, looking out the window. He turned his attention to Prudence. “Anyone suspect anything?”

She shook her head. “I’m certain not.”

“Try to stay away from that side of town for a while.”

Matthew put his hand on the door. Ruth hugged Prudence and lifted her hand toward Praetorian. “You two be safe.” She pointed at Prudence. “Don’t go back out with that Major. He is a dangerous man.”

Her friend shuddered and lifted a hand as if to ward her off. “No worries there.”

“If you see him coming, try to go the other way.” She glanced at Praetorian. “Next time, it would be good to have more than a day’s notice.”

His lips thinned. “Indeed it would.”

Ruth hugged Prudence one more time and lifted a strand of her hair.
