chapter twelve
Mum,” Wu Ji said, his tone full of awe, “are you saying that all these years, you knew about time magic and never said a thing?”
Yvonne looked at him and her expression grew tender. “I only found out a few years ago. Did you really think I wouldn’t recognise you, when you were growing up to look so much like the boy I looked after for six months, who broke my heart when he left so suddenly?”
Patsy felt awkward hearing her usually stern teacher sound so mawkish, but Wu Ji’s face clearly showed that he was totally enthralled to find out his mother had been able to keep such a big secret for so long.
Yvonne looked dreamy. “You were about 11 or 12 when I started getting suspicious. Your dad passed away around that time, and at first I thought I was imagining things because I was feeling lonely, with you and your brother growing up and all. But you were so similar to Wu Que—not just your looks, but your mannerisms. I started to think again about the notebooks I found in Maggie’s room—”
“What notebooks?” Patsy interrupted, her heart aflutter as she guessed what Yvonne was going to say.
“After Maggie died, when I was packing up the things in her room, I came across a couple of notebooks. Some pages had only a few words, some whole paragraphs. A mixture of English and Chinese were used, and the Chinese words were even written using traditional Chinese characters! There were also some poems and drawings. The handwriting was cursive and very hard to read, but from what I could tell, it seemed like the author had a very vivid imagination about time travelling.”
“It’s Maggie’s parents’ notebooks!” Patsy exclaimed. “Maggie said she had to learn about time magic from those notebooks when her parents died!”
Elena slapped her thigh hard as if in self-rebuke. “How could we have totally forgotten about those notebooks?”
Yvonne continued, “I had not thought about them in a long time, but when Wu Ji started looking more and more like how I remembered Wu Que, I went into the storeroom and dug out the box containing Maggie’s things. The condition of the notebooks had deteriorated even more by then. The pages were so brittle, they were practically falling apart in my fingers as I flipped them. I read enough to confirm what I remembered, and I started to wonder if these scribblings were not fiction after all.”
“Was that when you talked to Auntie Charlotte?” Wu Ji asked.
Yvonne nodded. “I asked her if she’d noticed you resembled someone we knew when she was 14. At first, she tried to pretend she didn’t know what I was talking about. Finally, I told her about the notebooks, and she knew she couldn’t lie to me any more.”
“It’s a wonder you didn’t think she was crazy!” Elena said, shaking her head.
“If I didn’t believe her, I think I would have gone crazy!” Yvonne said. “I didn’t have any photos of Wu
