The Team Changes

Over a period of time I began to develop a growing conviction that as strong as our team was, with a growing church and my increasing additional responsibility outside my home church, we now required what I called a ‘Big Hitter’. While I did not undervalue the excellent gifts and superb contributions of the existing team, I suggested we look for an additional team member to supplement our teaching ministry. It was over a meal with Terry and Wendy Virgo that Mick and Val Taylor were mentioned – at that time Mick was an elder at a ground-breaking church in Bracknell but was ready for a move.

The problem was that we had no money to employ another pastor, and certainly not one whose experience required more than a trainee’s salary. I told our elders the news, but in the context of expressing my disappointment that we could not afford to take on further staff members as we were still paying off loans covering the costs of the KC2000 project and the additional extension. Phil Varley immediately reminded me that we had been looking for someone with the gift mix of a Mick Taylor – an excellent Bible teacher and experienced pastor – for a number of years, and further that we had never allowed financial considerations alone to limit any step forward. He encouraged me at least to meet him. From all we knew of the Bracknell church, we believed that he would be at home with our philosophy of ministry and fit well into being part of a large church. I agreed to meet up with him and arranged for an informal exploratory meeting during a break in the course of one of the Newfrontiers prayer and fasting times, where leaders meet over two days, three times a year. I went into the meeting ready to explain all the reasons why such a move could not happen. By the end of our time together I was convinced that we should proceed and was ready to change my attitude to the information that was shaping my decision. As elders we went to the church and told them what had happened and requested we raise some additional money – and with some generous help from our friends in Bracknell the deal was done.

It would be my observation that too many leaders set up their leadership teams so that their own abilities appear to be head and shoulders above those of the team they lead. This can give a false impression that they are extremely good leaders. I believe one of the true tests of great leadership is the stature of the men and women around the primary leader. I am surrounded by men and women of great gifting and capacity, each in their own area of expertise far more gifted than I am. I would have it no other way. As I have said before, ‘staff your weaknesses’ – and this also explains why we have such a large
