Chapter 45
Garima clambered into the sleek Limousine, dragging a khaki kit bag behind him. Lachlan clicked his fingers to the driver as the man reached forward to close the door. âPut that in the boot, please, Dan.â
âYes, sir.â The bag whisked from the interior and Garima stretched out his long legs.
His appearance suggested he knew about the rendezvous. Heâd turned up at Lexiâs house many times caked in mud and sweat. Her washing machine cleaned the orange clay from his kit better than the one at the rectory, and her shower ran hotter. Sheâd half hoped he might mess up Lachlanâs smart vehicle with his filthy boots, but the thought seemed ludicrous as he sat opposite her. His compulsion meant he arrived in their fatherâs presence tidy. Dignified. Collected. His uniform of black clerical shirt and trousers provided protection against the unknown. He didnât wear his dog collar, but Lexi knew it nestled somewhere about his person like a talisman.
âThis is nice.â Garimaâs smile stretched across his face as he spoke the words. Lexi scowled at him and narrowed her eyes at his betrayal.
âOnly if you wanted to come,â she replied in a snarky tone.
Lachlan poured tea from an antique floral pot while the Limousine idled in the car park. Garimaâs team mates rumbled past in groups, some still wearing their studded boots and others barefoot. Garima ran a hand through his damp hair, leaving it curled into antennae on his crown. In the dim light of the vehicle, Lexi noticed darker patches beneath his arms from his shower. Despite his frantic rush to obey Lachlanâs call, he still held more poise than she ever managed.
âWhy are we here?â Garima accepted the offered tea and stole the question from Lexiâs lips. Gratitude surged from her chest to greet her brother in a tsunami of emotion. He blinked across at her as Lachlan cleared his throat. Lexi sensed him reading her in his silent, probing way. He saw her disappointment and her fear. His foot touched hers and remained in contact.
âNeither of you heeded my warnings.â Lachlan stared from one to the other. âAbout the dead clergyman.â
Lexi glanced at her brother and shrugged. âI didnât go poking. Did you?â
âNo.â He blinked at their father, his face frozen into an expression of surprise. âWhat do you mean?â
âYou were seen.â The full wattage of his penetrating gaze rested on Lexiâs face. âStop, immediately.â
Her lower lip flapped in response. She had no words. âBut Iâm not looking for his killer,â she stammered. And then she remembered Trent Barnard. She pushed her spine against the warm leather seat and sighed. âOkay, so one of my current cases overlaps with Father Donaldâs role as a priest. But Iâm not investigating his death. Iâm...â Her words trailed to nothing. Coloured pieces shifted in the mind map of her brain. What if the same person who killed Liza Barnard had ended Father Donaldâs blameless life? Plus, the earlier women.
The connection between the mysteryâs elements burned bright and then faded.
