Nanninga out jumps the Argentine defence to equalise in the 82nd minute.

“At first we were in a hotel in the Andes. The world practically ended there. There were only mountains, nothing else. The training pitch would be frozen every morning.

“When we went shopping we had police with us who were wearing the same tracksuits as us, but they also carried guns. They pretended to be part of our entourage. We could see guys with rifles on rooftops. It was all a bit strange. We didn’t have any friends or family with us there.

“Johnny Rep was our preferred striker, and when that didn’t work I would come on as a wild-card substitute. I was mentally prepared for that. At least I got on. There were some guys who went the whole way there and just sat on the bench. And they were good players.

“In the West Germany match I got sent off. Bernd Hölzenbein and me were pushing each other in the wall and we both got a yellow card. But as the ref was walking away someone else said, ‘Stupid ref!’ and the ref thought it was me and he sent me off. I’d only been on the pitch for seven minutes. Because of that I was suspended for the Italy match and then it was the final.
