“HEY, WHAT’S YER STOCK?” All eyes and ears are turned to the nearest of the returning dory trawlers. The shoresmen are weighing out and washing a fare of salt codfish before resalting. New-looking “spiles” (never “piles” in Gloucester) and heavy planking indicate the wharf, probably on Rocky Neck across from Duncan’s Point, is being extended. (Blatchford)

AS WATERTIGHT INSIDE AS OUT, a couple of dories double as tubs for washing cod being weighed off at Walen’s wharf, now Star Fisheries. Rock ballast is piled behind the men, with an anchor cable beside the wheelbarrow. (Blatchford)
