ANY ILLUSION THAT LILY COULD RELAX was dispelled the moment she emerged from Aaronâs pre-op station.
There was her mother, waiting. This day wouldnât get any easier. Lily forced a cornered smile. âAt ease, Mom. Crisis averted.â
âCrisis curtailed,â Mom corrected. âThereâs a difference.â
Lily massaged her knuckles. âDid you ever consider that maybe itâd be better if I went to Dalton-Pearce? Face it, Mom. Itâs not like we have the greatest working relationship.â
Her motherâs forehead knitted. âYou think Iâm harder on you than they would be?â
âExponentially so.â
âAt home, itâs another matter, Lily. But on the job, I treat you with precisely the level of respect that you earn.â
Compulsion got the better of Lilyâs inclination toward silence. âSo, here itâs guilty until proven innocent?â
âJust as it is with every new employee on this staff.â
âI interned here. And Iâm hardly new to you,â Lily replied. âIâd think that counts for something.â
Her mom shook that aristocratic head of hers. âNow, youâre asking for special consideration?â
âNo, Iâm not,â Lily said. There had to be a way to articulate this. âIâm just...questioning my own judgment, I guess.â Lily leaned against the wall. âWhen I took this job, I thought I could work here. With you. With Dr. Cyrus. Adding Rainy to the equation loaded the deck, sure. But I donât know. Maybe I bit off too much. Maybe family working so close together isnât such a great idea.â
Mom seemed to soften. A little. âYouâre rationalizing.â
âI am not.â
Claire leaned against the wall beside her. âYour father and I worked well side-by-side for the better part of two decades. You referenced that when you interviewed for your residency here.â
She turned her momâs way. âHow would you know?â
âDr. Cyrus consulted me.â
Lily rolled her eyes.
âIâm hospital counsel, Lily. Itâs well within appropriate protocol.â
Lily laced her fingers through her hair. âThis is... You know what, Mom? As much as I adore you and the more I go over it, I donât think I want you that deep into my business.â
Mom released a sigh. The kind that said she expected more maturity than Lily could muster at that moment. âTell me, Lily. Who came into whose already existing business of twenty years?â
âFine, Mom. Okay, itâs your territory.â
âAnd who came barging into whose private business first thing Monday morning?â
Lily lowered her voice as an orderly passed. âThat wouldâve been you, Mom. Calling me before I even got to work.â
âI take it Iâm still allowed to call you.â
âOf course, but...â Lily shook her head. âYouâre saying there was no business agenda to that call?â
âNone,â Mom said. âI was attempting to tell you about my engagement. On a personal level.â
All she could do was concede.
Maybe Mom was right this time. âBusiness, personal. Itâs all tangled up in this huge hairball in my head and, you know what? Iâm kind of choking on it. And you can call me a quitter. You can call me weak. But you canât call me a liar. Because that, Mother, is the truth.â
Mom took it in quietly. âAll right. I just have one question.
