Denise

Denise had been trying to help a friend whose insurance company had denied his claim. While her friend felt the denial made sense and was ready to accept the disappointing situation and move on, Denise insisted that the ruling was unfair and angrily vowed to write a letter on his behalf. Encouraged to explore her anger by writing a self-discovery letter, she began to cry as she wrote, “I shouldn’t have to do this. I’m too young.”

Denise had used the seven-step process many times before, and she immediately thought about how she had developed strong feelings about right and wrong while growing up. As a child, she had had the role of protecting her younger, weaker siblings, even though she was young herself. Now her siblings were grown and able to take care of themselves, but Denise had simply maintained her old role and transferred her “protection” to others whom she saw as weak and needy. As she picked up her pen to begin writing, her long-hidden feelings about being too young to carry the burden of protecting others emerged.

Your unconscious contains so much more information than your conscious mind can hold. When you open to a process of self-inquiry such as this one, your unconscious mind can give you information that illuminates the outdated or incorrect belief that might be fueling your anger. This is what happened to Denise. Growing up, she hadn’t been able to access her feelings of overwhelm at having to protect and parent her siblings at such a young age. Now it was safe to examine them. So out they came, giving Denise a chance to set herself free from an unnecessarily constricting pattern by exploring and updating her old feelings and the belief that produced them.

“I’ve always tried to make things ‘right,’” she said, “always saw it as my responsibility. I guess it’s time to let that go. I just don’t want to be everyone’s protector anymore.”
