NELLY

I cry. I sit on the bed and cry the second Ghost steps out of the room. I don’t want space, I just want him, and I don’t know how to make him see that I’m so goddamn terrified of him leaving me that I fight myself on a daily basis not to be the overbearing, crazy girlfriend my brain begs me to be.

Rosey bursts in minutes later. “Ghost sent me,” she says, wrapping her arms around me, and I smile to myself. He still sent someone to be with me even though he’s mad. “Are you okay?”

I push to sit up and then tell her everything, from my lies snowballing to his time spent with Harriett and how insecure it makes me feel. When I gulp a lungful of air, she smiles and rubs my hand. “I see why Ghost didn’t want me to come.” I frown, and she adds, “I was the only one available. Do you want me to kill him?” It’s what she does to earn a living, so I can’t blame her for offering.

I laugh, shaking my head. “No, I really like him.”

“Damn it, Cupid is always getting in my way.” Her smile fades and her expression turns serious. “Ghost really likes you, Nelly. I don’t see him ever hurting you or running away with Harriett, or any other woman for that matter. He’s a pain in my arse, but he’s a good guy, and you won’t often hear me saying that about a man.”

“I hurt him today,” I admit. “I didn’t mean to. I was trying to tell my parents all the amazing things he does, and he assumed I was ashamed.”

“Were you?”

“No,” I screech. “Not even a little. I just wanted them to love him as much as I do.”

“You really need to talk to him, Nelly. Communication is key, apparently, if you want a relationship to work.”

I grin. “How do you know that?”

“Hadley was lecturing Maverick earlier today when he upset Rylee. It must be a full moon out there this week—everyone’s getting their knickers in a twist over relationships.”
