18. DUNCAN EDWARDS

Duncan Edwards was admittedly a player I didn’t see all that much of, and sadly this is true for most football fans. The lasting impression he made on Bobby Charlton, his fellow ‘Busby Babe’, and the stories Bobby has regaled me with over the years were enough for me to consider him as one of the greatest ever to play the game. In fact, everyone who was fortunate enough to see him play in his tragically brief career described him in the same awestruck manner.

Cementing his place in the first team at Manchester United before he had even reached his eighteenth birthday, he played predominantly on the left-hand side of defence but regularly burst forward to unleash devastating shots. With all the attributes to succeed in any position, it was not uncommon to see him deployed elsewhere on the pitch so as to subject the unprepared to his talents.

Between 1953 and 1958, the excitement surrounding Edwards was unavoidable. His manager and teammates spoke of him in the loftiest of terms. Matt Busby said, ‘I rate Duncan Edwards the most complete footballer in Britain – perhaps the world’, while Bobby Charlton adds, ‘I always felt I could compare well with any player, except Duncan. He was such a talent, I always felt inferior to him.’
