Day stands behind them at the door, pushing ahead of the gray-skinned dreadpunk, who is still on the phone. She is not sure what to do. The rain is cold on her soft skin as she steps into the night, and she wishes that she had not left her coat behind.

In the back of the jags’ SUV, Sayd’s view is fuzzy as he wakes. Gray night and lights fly by the window. Stopping, they delay a long, dark, silent time before opening the door. “Your intention was the result of temporary insanity.” They lay him on the rise of the hill. “Halcyon forgives. You’ll regain major motor function within an hour.” Sayd is left on the grass in front of his apartment building, staring into the rain, unable even to turn his face.

Raindrops spatter on his cheeks, and over the course of minutes he begins to feel them. Cars come and then fade in the city’s hum. Lights in the apartments stretching away from him stream seamlessly into the stars and clouds—rolling ominous through his vision. He thinks, Orion, was your life wasted? Just to become vile entertainment for a half-breed? What’s wrong with our hearts? Did you know? It was all for nothing. The torture of your soul. He wonders what Orion must have felt as he . . . He wonders if he thought anything at all after the fall. The darkening sky has no answer, vacant.

Where is your hunter? he taunts.

As if in answer a birdwoman sweeps past, away in a long black coat, not that high above, gracefully a mysterious shape—shadowed v, trailing light and rain—and Sayd finds the strength, painfully, to close his eyes. There he sees Orion. His likeness, the blue of his eyes hangs on in defiance of time.
