Morganne listened to Colt’s side of the conversation with his boss, wondering about Owen Plumber’s friendship with Blaine. If Vince was correct in describing their relationship, it seemed logical that Blaine might have sent his lawyer some information to give to Owen, convincing the guy to help him out. Yet if Rolland had done that, he risked losing his law license. And if Blaine had help from Owen, why had he killed Kay Fisher?

There were too many moving pieces to the puzzle. She began typing at the computer, sketching a potential timeline of events. She started with the first sighting of Blaine by Neal Henderson at the Wagon Wheel, then added the crime scenes, including all the various attempts against her.

It was possible Blaine’s first stop upon returning to the area had been his father’s place in Rock Springs, possibly to get money and a vehicle. Then he’d come to Jackson, maybe stopped for a drink at the Wagon Wheel, before heading over to visit his former girlfriend.

But why go to Kay’s house if he had gotten what he needed from Silas’s house? And why not go straight to Owen? Unless the guy had been out on the road.

She abruptly straightened and looked at Colt as he pocketed his phone. “What if Blaine took Silas’s vehicle, but it died somewhere along the way, so that was why he went to Kay’s house to get her Nissan?”

“It’s possible,” he agreed.

“Let’s check the impound lots. Maybe that’s why no one has spotted the Impala.” She reached for the phone again and called the closest impound lot, owned by a guy named Todd Gibson. “Mr. Gibson? This is Officer Kimball with the Jackson PD. Do you have a Chevy Impala that’s been towed in recently?”

“Sure do. Was brought in two nights ago,” Gibson agreed. “Why, do you think it was used in a crime?” There was a note of morbid fascination in his tone.

“Possibly. We’ll be right over to take a look, thanks.” She replaced the receiver and stood. “Silas’s car was brought in two days ago and is in the impound lot. I should have thought of looking there earlier. We may have missed some key evidence.” She inwardly railed at herself for dropping the lead.

“Morganne, you can’t be on top of every single minute detail of this case.” Colt rested a hand on her shoulder. “We’ve been shot at several times, stumbled across Kay Fisher’s dead body and have been following up on the shell casings. We’ve been working hard—finding Silas’s car wasn’t exactly a priority.”

“I know, but still.” She wasn’t ready to cut herself any slack over dropping this thread, but she knew based on her estimated timeline that even if they’d found the Chevy earlier, Kay Fisher still would have been murdered. “I just hope there’s more evidence in there that will prove Winston used it.”

“That would be helpful. But remember, Winston was working here a full day ahead of us,” Colt pointed out. “He must have gone to his father’s first, then to the Wagon Wheel, then to Kay Fisher’s place.
