Chapter 16

PERSEPHONE

Spending the day with Seth was weird, since he was there as my bodyguard. Though, as far as bodyguards go, he was a completely irreverent one. It was almost humorous, if not for the fact that I actually needed a bodyguard.

These caves had always been one of my favorite places on the island, along with the tide pools over by Scott’s Farms. There was a small field right on the other side of the caves that always bloomed with wildflowers. It’s where I met Sebastian all those years ago.

Since then, he and I had spent countless hours exploring these caves. We’d sit on the rocky beach for hours talking in the sunlight during out summers together. It was my happy place.

As I was leaving the caves, my phone rang. Kassidy’s name lit up the screen.

“Hey Kassidy, what’s up?”

“You need to get Seth and get home. Now. There’s been a break in?”

“Another one? At your house?” I asked, not even thinking she could have meant in my unit.

“No, Perse, your house. Mutt is gone and Ethan left you a message. Logan just got here, but you need to come see this.”

“Yeah, we’re on our way.”

I ended the call and Seth was already leading me to his truck by my elbow. I had to give him credit. The man liked to goof around and didn’t take life too seriously, but he took his job seriously. It was admirable.

The closer we got to the duplex, the more my stomach twisted. I watched flowers, houses, and trees wishing it was just a leisurely afternoon drive. I wasn’t ready to see whatever was greeting me when we arrived.

Seth pulled into the driveway, and we both got out. Kassidy came around the back of the house, a scared Mutt right beside her.

“You found him,” I said, letting out a sigh of relief. I got down on the ground and pet Mutt behind the ear

“He was hiding behind the shed out back. You have a broken back door and back window. And, that’s not all.”

Seth and I followed her around back where we found Logan inspecting the back door, which was clearly splintered in a few areas. Mutt ran over to Logan and wove in and out between him and Kassidy.

“You said there was a message?” I asked, expecting a note or something, but she didn’t give me anything.

“Follow me. Carefully,” she said.

She led me in through the broken back door and shattered glass, down the hallway to the living room. Our units were almost identical and mirrored, except instead of a side door, I had a back door flanked by windows at the very end of the hallway.

When we got to the living room, I saw the message immediately. On the shared wall of the duplex, he’d spelled it
