The Millennium Dome was built on a toxic peninsula wasteland on the Thames in the ’90s. Conceived as a showplace for what turned out to be a poorly attended turn-of-the-century exposition, it had some elements that were clever in theory: The world’s largest domed structure, it was (and is) supported by a dozen 100m-tall yellow towers, one for each hour on the clock in honor of nearby Greenwich Mean Time. But that preening and meaningless symbolism cost a shocking £789 million, and then it stood empty for half a decade while locals cursed the eyesore and argued about how to use it. In 2007, it was finally reborn as the city’s finest performance arena, with 20,000 seats and seemingly limitless corporate branding potential.
