Chapter 13

Edward entered Chodstone Hall’s second reception room in the hope that he could spend some time alone with Elizabeth that afternoon but soon found that impossible. She was ensconced in a game of whist with Vera and Alice.

Elizabeth had just won another game, and Vera said, “If I didn’t know Miss Davis and her handsome guardian, I would think she was cheating.” She laughed. “But of course, I do know you and would never think such a thing for certainty. But tell me, darling, how do you play so well?”

She smiled at Chodstone. “His Grace taught me well, I suppose.”

“She is a quick study and I am most fortunate to have such a wonderful player to keep me on my toes, am I not?”

“Yes, indeed, Your Grace.”

Vera said the words with a smile, but Edward saw the resentment in her eyes as her gaze landed on Elizabeth.

Edward’s mother stood up. “And I am the worst card player in all of England. Come along, Miss Davis, I would like your opinion of some fabric I purchased this morning.”

Once they’d left, Chodstone took his leave also and, not wanting to be alone with Vera, Edward left for Wellsneath without so much as a word to her.

***

That evening, Edward was back at Chodstone Hall and about to dine with Elizabeth. He paced the foyer, but the movement didn’t help Edward’s mood one iota. Since the night in the maze, the night he had kissed Elizabeth, she had been all he could think about. Her warmth, her attraction to him, he almost growled aloud his attraction to her. He had never felt that way before. He’d had many dalliances, but no woman had ever touched his heart, his soul, like she had.

She was different indeed, and although something in the back of his mind warned him not to become too close, that there was something strongly different about her, his foremind and his body liked the differences, liked her way of speech, liked her.

Keep pacing.

He had thought to rid himself of the need to see Elizabeth—the incessant need to be alone with her. After two whole months without her company, one would expect his longing to have declined but during that time all he could do was think about her, think about holding her in his arms and not letting her go for all time. Even when intrigued with the art of growing grapes and the alchemy of turning those grapes into wine, Elizabeth’s smiling image would appear in his mind and he would stop listening to his tutors.

Keep pacing.

He had to know if it was true, if she was to be married to some unknown American. He thought the forced movement would rid himself of his irritability and his restlessness before he joined his host and the other guests for dinner.

Mayhap if he talked with Elizabeth, learned more about her, the silly notion of a goddess walking amongst them would dispel. Life could then return to its normal, predictable routine. He could go on as he had before that fateful night when his carriage nearly ran her down.
