Chapter Thirteen

She loved it when Jet was in the mood to cook – those moods usually occurred when he was supposed to be editing – because it meant delicious food to eat, but this time she knew it was something more. This time he hadn’t done it just because he enjoyed cooking, or because the mood struck him, or he was procrastinating, or he wanted a taste of home, but because he wanted to do something nice for her.

They ate with gusto, barely talking around mouthfuls of fragrant curry and fluffy rice.

When they were finished, Terri sat back against the wall cradling her stomach and sighed, “That was amazing.”

“Why, thank you. Thank you very much.”

“Was that supposed to be Elvis? Jeez, you must be nervous.”

“Why would I be nervous?”

“The same reason I’m nervous. This is so new. It feels like we’re both trying too hard to be boyfriend and girlfriend.”

Jet blew out a breath. “I know. You would have thought this would be easier; it should be like starting on the one-hundredth date because we already know everything about each other. You realize, if we’d been dating since we met, I could reasonably ask you to marry me by now?”

“Whoa, slow down champ. How about this, we both need to stop trying to act how we think a couple should act. Maybe we’re not like other couple; every relationship is different and like you said, we’ve had a jump start on all the getting to know each other stuff.”

Lying back on the bed, his hands over his own stomach and his head near her hip, he said, “Do you feel like we’ve wasted the last three years being friends?”

“No,” Terri said fiercely. “It’s no longer a secret that I’ve had a crush on you from day one, but I still wouldn’t change anything about the past three years. If you can’t be best friends with the person you’re in a relationship with, then what’s the point? Think about it, friendship is the most important part.”

His eyebrows knit together, a dark line above his brown eyes. She wanted to reach out and smooth the furrows on his forehead and after a moment she realized there was no longer a reason for her not to touch him, so she did it. He started a little, before the serious look on his face disappeared and a smile took its place. Next, she ran her hand through his hair.

Jet sighed, tilting his head back and closing his eyes.

After a moment, she lifted his head and shuffled over so that he could rest it in her lap.

His eyes opened and he peered up at her, lifting a hand to cup her cheek.

“What you said makes sense,” he said seriously, “friendship is important, but do we also get to do the sexy stuff?”

She laughed. “I think we can come to some sort of arrangement.” Leaning over him, she pressed her lips against his, his nose bumping her cheek.

He hummed softly when she drew back. “I’m not sure that arrangement’s going to work for me.
