Chapter 9
As soon as Nate shut the front door behind him, Francis pounced on him. "One of your human predecessors, a guy named Charles Spurgeon, said 'many are troubled because the gospel interferes with their sin.' You might have heard of him."
"Name dropper. Francis, I just don't see what the big deal is," Nate said. "All those other men out there are falling in love and getting married. Why are you trying to stop me from doing the same?"
"For one thing, you're not like all other men. Many are called but few are chosen. You are one of the lucky ones."
"Lucky? I'm lucky that I have restrictions placed on me that other men don't have to bear? Give me a break!"
"OK, Nate. Let's use our imaginations a little bit and look into the future. Here you are sixty-two years old enthralled with a fifty-eight year old woman. The average life expectancy of a male in the US is seventy-six point one years. That gives you about fourteen years, give or take a few, to enjoy your physical intimacy, if both of you are still able and desirous, your new toys that you'd inherit, your new living quarters, your new self image, etcetera. Maybe you'd be lucky and go past the average a ways and maybe get twenty-five more years. And there are no guarantees those will be good years. I hear elderly people complaining all the time about pains and ailments. What happens next?"
"I get to see Jesus."
"Correctamundo. And will you be glad to see him?"
"Why wouldn't I be?"
"Nate, God is good, all the time."
"If you could see me right now, I'd be nodding. However in his goodness God is not always pleased. If I might drop some more names, first there was a guy named Esau. He sold his birthright for a bowl of soup. A stinkin' bowl of soup. That's what you'd be doing if you bailed from your assignment in order to enjoy a few earthly pleasures over a small span of years. Then if you think God never punishes people, look at Moses. He was one of God's generals. One of his superstars. Remember how he led the Hebrews around the desert for forty years trying to reach the Promised Land?"
"Duh."
"Why didn't he get to enter it?"
"Because he died."
"Hold on, Nate boy. Before he died, he disobeyed God. Not totally disobeyed him but just didn't do what he was told to do using the right method. God punished him by telling him he would not be allowed to go into the Promised Land with his people. God told Moses to speak to the rock and water would gush forth. Instead of struck the rock twice. And for that he didn't get to reach the goal he spent forty years trying to obtain."
"What's your point?"
Francis moaned. "Moses was one his peeps. If he didn't get a free pass, you shouldn't expect one. If you walk away from this commission you've received, God's favor will be withdrawn."
"Hold on.
