GENESIS 22NEW TESTAMENT PASSAGE
Then God said, âTake your son, your only son, whom you loveâIsaacâand go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show youâ (verse 2). John 3:16
On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance (verse 4). 1 Corinthians 15:3-5
He said to his servants, âStay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to youâ (verse 5). 1 Peter 3:18
Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife (verse 6). 1 Peter 2:24
Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, âFather?â âYes, my son?â Abraham replied. âThe fire and wood are here,â Isaac said, âbut where is the lamb for the burnt offering?â Abraham answered, âGod himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my sonâ (verses 7-8). John 1:29
When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood (verse 9). Matthew 27:2
Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son (verse 10). Colossians 2:14
But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, âAbraham! Abraham!â âHere I am,â he replied. âDo not lay a hand on the boy,â he said. âDo not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only sonâ (verses 11-12). Romans 8:32
The emphasis of this chapter has been to recognize a major theme that is often missed: the Bible as a whole (including the Old Testament) wants us to appreciate and focus on God the Son, even before God the Son became a human being and dwelt among us. Read John 1:14. In this verse, the phrase âmade his dwelling among usâ in the original Greek denotes âdwelling in a tabernacle or tent.â What parallels can you draw between this and God's words to His people in Exodus 29:45 and Ezekiel 37:27?
