Fangrin’s Woe

Lord Fangrin entered his chambers and draped his cape over a black ornate armchair. His command ship was cold, dark, and quiet, just how he liked it. The Smilodon slumped down into the armchair opposite the one he placed his cape upon and stared into the fireplace in silence —as he did most nights since leaving Cryloth. He crossed his legs and grabbed the bottle of wine from the end table next to him and poured himself a glass. He raised it into the air in a silent salute before bringing it to his lips for a shallow sip. A drop of wine slowly rolled down one of his long fangs before hitting the marble floor. He stared over at the empty leather chair next to him with a sigh. He could feel the void of sorrow welling up within him, threatening to pull him in and drown him in his despair. He resisted the temptation, but why he didn’t know. Was it stubbornness? Pride? A sense of duty to his people? He knew not. He leaned his head back against the chair and replayed the day they left Cryloth over in his mind, as he had done every day since.

Tensions ran high and time was running out. It had taken months to construct the Glacial Ascent: The largest ship Cryloth had ever seen. Designed by the great Doctor Libra and requiring a staggering amount of resources, the gargantuan ark ship was intended to ferry the entire Crylothean population across the stars, far from their dying world. Cryloth had been on the decline for generations. Increasingly extreme weather phenomena caused by changes in the atmosphere brought on by hundreds of years of industrialization, pollution, and greed.

Cryloth was an icy planet that existed in the far reaches of its solar system, far from its giant red sun. The Crylotheans were a technologically advanced civilization with glorious golden cities. While they had once had formal governments ruling different areas of the planet, they eventually gave way to corporations that abolished borders and established corporate zones in their place based on industrial needs. All governments were replaced by a singular corporatocracy. Those at the top of the corporatocracy lived like kings while those at the bottom lived a dystopian existence, often forced into a life of crime just to survive in the tarnished under-cities while the rich lived in massive floating cities constructed to address overpopulation. The planet’s resources and its people had been exploited for every drop of profitability with little regard for sustainability or long-term environmental impacts. Inevitably, this system could not last. Famine, droughts, mega-storms, quakes, and volcanic activity —along with a fragile social net resulted in societal collapse. Those that survived became nomadic. It took generations to reestablish civilization. This time, the Crylotheans chose to do things differently by empowering those who could improve the lives of all Crylotheans. The great floating cities had collapsed long ago and were later reintegrated into the rebuilt cities of the modern Crylothean era.
